How do you like the site?

Hey everyone, I want this site to house everyone who can every claim UNR as their own so help me make this the best UNR social network on the web.

What do you think of the site: the colors, the home page layout, the features? What's important to you and what do you want to see on here, event, news, more forum topics, all the ASUN clubs, flash games, something else completely? Other than networking with each other, what should this site become?

Drop a comment and have fun on the site, explore and make sure you invite all your friends, we need all 8,000 current students and all the faculty and all the staff to be the biggest social network on Ning!

The colors are nice, but the site lacks character. If possible, could the top banner be updated to have a bit more of a Wolf Pack feel to it? (And while you're at it, get rid of the comma after UNR up there - the English minor in me is twitching in annoyance.)

Other than that, the site looks fine. I like all the features so far; I'm not a hardcore social networking person, so as long as everything is readable and usable, I'm good.

Thanks for the input. Do you have any ideas on how to make it more Wolf Packy, I'm not sure what to do with it? As for the comma, the second half of the tagline is an independent clause so the comma, though not entirely necessary, is good for setting off the two thoughts and creating a pause for the reader.

Also, what do you think would help livin' up the site more? I have a meeting with UNR Friday, perhaps more cross over content from the school?

Well, just a picture that identifies with UNR would be enough. Since this is a social area, I'd think something involving people - like the new Union, for example - would be a good thing to associate. Make that a gradient in the current banner and it'd be good. It doesn't have to be the JCSU, either. Alphie and/or Wolfy would be cool, and so would just about anywhere on campus where there are people. No close-ups, though, or it'll feel like a personal website rather than a social network. Try to keep the faces of students obscure if you go with something like that, or even consider colorizing the image the same color blue as the other banners to keep the color scheme and only give a vague idea of what the picture is of. It'd still give things some visual interest.

Like I said, you've got the colors down. While not quite UNR Silver and Blue, it's close enough. If it can be achieved spot-on (and still pass the "monochrome readability" test), go for it.

As for what will bring people here, there's not a whole lot I can suggest. Like I said, I'm not very hardcore when it comes to networking sites. You just have to look at Facebook and Myspace and ask yourself what are they not doing (or doing poorly) that we can do better? The only problem I have right now is that I only know a handful of people on here, whereas the other networks' friend lists are going into three figures.

I like the cut of your jib. I'm particularly busy the next two weeks but the site's not going anywhere, so I'll try to have it up by the end of the semester. Also, if UNR takes some control, they can redo the logo for us which would be nice, I'll see if I can swing it.

As for the us vs. Facebook, I agree. Unfortunately Ning only provides a certain amount of features, all of which (+1) that we're using. What we have that they don't have is a self-contained and personalized network. But it's still missing something to get people to come here instead. Not sure what.

Next year I'm thinking of coupling the site with The Nevada Sagebrush so it's simultaneously a news site and a social network, what do you think of that?

In the meantime, you could go to the Invite tab and invite all of those hundreds of people you know ;)

I like your suggestions in any case, so I'll see what I can do to accommodate them in the next month or so.
